Before you hire
A 10 point guide to help you select the right equipment
1
Environment
Will you be working indoors or outdoors?
• When working indoors seek an electric machine with zero emissions.
• For work outdoors and when there are no charging facilities then a diesel
machine may be the best choice
• Considering a bi-energy machine gives you the benefit of both diesel and electric
2
Terrain
What are the ground conditions like where you will be working?
• Working indoors? Maybe on a finished floor? Protect by using a machine
with non-marking tyres or wheel covers
• On rough terrain a diesel machine is probably the best choice. For extremely rugged or
extremely wet sites choose a 4 wheel drive option
• Working on a gradient or slope? Use a machine with outriggers to ensure stability
3
Wind Rating
Are you working outdoors?
• Every machine working outdoors will be wind rated, it is important to
thoroughly check ground conditions and outreach
• Do not use a zero wind speed rated machine externally where there can
be a risk of tipping due to outside conditions
• Check wind speeds with the use of an anemometer
• Always refer to the machine’s operator manual to ensure you are working
within the maximum safe wind speeds
4
Access
Are there any access restrictions?
• When working indoors, will the machine have to pass through narrow
doorways or even up a lift shaft?
• Does the site have machine weight restrictions, always consider the weight
of the machine when choosing the correct one
5
Working Height
How far up and how far out do you need to reach?
• Working heights are calculated using the maximum platform height plus 2 metres
above where your feet will be
• Depending on the height you need to reach and there are no obstacles, a scissor lift
may be the best option
• When working over racking and shelving, mast booms are usually the best option
• The most versatile solution for accessing areas up and over, indoors or outdoors, are
articulated booms
